Michelle Mercer chat to Jenny Miller, Miglio Designer Jewellery Entrepreneur

Jenny Miller, Miglio Designer Jewellery

Firstly, how did the company come about?
In 1996 the success and experience gained during our 15 years existence as jewellery manufacturers encouraged us to launch a direct sales company, Miglio. It is the world of direct selling and the independence this offers to women that has quite literally changed their entire outlook and careers forever. Over the years I have come to know incredible women, women who are managing their own successful Miglio businesses. They have contributed to the growth of Miglio and enriched my life.

Where do you get the inspiration from, for the pieces?
I draw most of my inspiration from the raw materials themselves. Brilliant cut Swarovski elements in delicious colours, exquisite semi precious stones and rare metals, speak to the untamed designer in me and they form the bases of each new collection. I travel constantly to identify the latest trends, but I never forget the woman I am designing for.

Do you have a favourite piece from the various collections?
I fall in love with each new collection I do and find it hard to choose just one or two favourites.

Miglio supports The Homestead – could you tell us a little about the charity?
The Homestead is very close to my heart. It is a project that is aimed at improving and rebuilding the lives of homeless children on the streets of Cape Town. Miglio provides the homestead with materials necessary to make bracelets and necklaces, which are then sold through our catalogues. Each piece is unique and strung with the love and appreciation of the women who make them in an effort to get their children off the streets and earn an income towards rebuilding their homes and their lives.

You also give back to your community – it must be very rewarding to see the positive difference that you are making to the lives of others?
When we started Miglio, my husband and I determined, that it would not only be a vehicle for reaching our dreams but that we would seek to empower our staff and consultants to do the same. Our business has underpinned a desire to give something back to the community in the country we were born and brought up in. Over the years I have seen so many women flourish and discover abilities they never knew they had. Their success has inspired me to think bigger and to take the opportunity of Miglio beyond the borders of South Africa.

What do you believe constitutes as true style?
I find the most stylish women are confident and true to themselves. One never remembers what clothes they were wearing but the impression they left behind. Style is not about a price tag, this is why I love our jewellery. It allows a woman to express her own personal style, even on the strictest budget. A luxury bag and a perfectly positioned necklace can add life to any outfit...add a generous dose of self-confidence and you have a combination that this unforgettable.

Is there anyone in particular, who you would love to see your jewellery on?
Michelle Obama, she’s the epitome of modern style. Her clothing taste is impeccable but someone needs to remind her to wear a statement necklace....

Must ask about this Jenny – are you excited about the World Cup?
Absolutely, it’s an amazing opportunity for South Africa to show the rest of the world the beauty and talent that exists in our country.

What advice would you give to women out there who want to set up their business?
It takes dedication, tenacity and a good idea or product to succeed in the business world. At Miglio, we encourage women to embark on that “Journey to Success” and start their own business as a Miglio consultant. The business lessons learned are invaluable and with the mentoring provided everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

Thanks for taking the time to speak to us Jenny.
